Vanilla perfume
FRENCH AFFAIR X
Vanilla is one of the most recognisable and ubiquitous scents in the world. Its sweet, warm aroma is used not only in cooking but also in the perfume industry, where it plays an extremely important role. What lies behind the uniqueness of vanilla? Why is it so valued in perfumery? Let's take a look at its role in fragrance compositions and the exceptional perfumes that fully harness its potential.
The source of pleasure – where does the scent of vanilla come from
This beloved flavour and fragrance can be reduced to the formula C8H8O3. This is the molecular formula of vanillin, which occurs naturally in pod-like capsules (especially from Vanilla planifolia). It constitutes 2% of the seed mass – so you can imagine the price of this raw material, considering the number of vanilla pods required for processing. In this context, the popularity of synthetic vanillin is unsurprising, and natural vanilla extract is synonymous with luxury.
Production of vanilla perfumes
Three species of vanilla are cultivated on an industrial scale: the aforementioned Vanilla planifolia, Vanilla Tahitensis, and Vanilla pompona. The first species is mainly used for perfume production, although some perfumers appreciate the different, more floral and fruity character of the Tahitensis variety. As Sylvaine Delacourte, who was responsible for creating Guerlain fragrances for many years, described it: "it is not sweet, but much more floral and powdery, more heliotropic."
To incorporate the tempting vanilla scent into perfumes, creators use tinctures (made by macerating chopped vanilla pods in alcohol) or absolutes – highly concentrated extracts produced using volatile solvents. The third method is to use cheaper synthetic extracts – vanillin or ethyl vanillin.
How vanilla perfumes are composed
Vanilla is one of the most sought-after ingredients in perfumes due to its versatility and ability to create pleasant associations. Perfume creators rarely focus solely on vanilla, but they readily reach for vanilla notes when creating the bases of their compositions.
The combination of ethyl vanillin with vanilla tincture creates the essence of gourmand perfumes – cosy, creamy, somewhat hedonistic. Natural vanilla from Madagascar and Réunion Island has a more earthy and certainly much more complex character. In its scent, you will find not only honey and creamy notes but also amber, woody, and sugarcane nuances. That's why it pairs beautifully with notes of spices, incense, and wood in the base of oriental perfumes, such as Tom Ford Noir Extreme. Meanwhile, in fresh, floral compositions, vanilla serves as a background that simultaneously rounds off sharper accents. This is precisely the path taken by Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne, Olivier Cresp, and Honorine Blanc, creating a composition that balances between vanilla depth and floral and spicy accents in YSL Black Opium.
Women's vanilla perfumes
Vanilla compositions, like floral ones, are associated with delicate, joyful sensuality. That's why they are usually found in women's perfumes. In the canon of women's vanilla perfumes, Dior Hypnotic Poison deserves special attention – a sensual, oriental composition where vanilla combines with almonds and sandalwood, giving the whole a warm, seductive character. Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium is a modern perfume where vanilla plays the role of a velvety base, perfectly contrasting with intense notes of coffee and jasmine. In Thierry Mugler Angel, vanilla enhances the gourmand character of the fragrance, harmonising with caramel and chocolate to create an appetising aroma. Lancôme La Vie Est Belle, on the other hand, delights with the sweetness of vanilla combined with patchouli and floral accords, creating a fragrance full of warmth and elegance.
Are vanilla perfumes only for women?
Absolutely not! Vanilla, although mainly associated with women's perfumes, also plays an important role in unisex and men's fragrances. It can be combined not only with typically feminine, floral notes, as exemplified by Tom Ford Fucking Fabulous. In this fragrance, notes of vanilla, oriental, woody, and leather elements meet, creating a universal composition for both women and men.
Men's vanilla perfumes
Dior Sauvage EDP is an interesting example of men's gourmand perfumes, in which vanilla from New Guinea was used. The fragrance creator, François Demachy, used it to smooth out the spicy and peppery notes present in his composition. You will also find a harmonious combination of vanilla and spicy notes in the men's fragrance Tom Ford Noir Extreme. Meanwhile, Versace Eros is a bolder composition where Madagascar vanilla enhances the sweet accents of apple and tonka, creating an intense, sensual fragrance together with woody and forest notes. Vanilla also finds its place in the base of such complex compositions as Tom Ford Noir de Noir, where it appears alongside earthy, spicy, and woody notes.
What season is best for vanilla perfumes?
Vanilla perfumes, due to their warm and cosy character, work best when that cosiness and warmth are most needed – during autumn and winter. In winter, vanilla combined with spices or woody notes becomes expressive yet unobtrusive, making it an ideal choice for evening outings or gatherings in elegant company.
In spring and summer, lighter vanilla compositions, often paired with fruits or flowers, can be the perfect solution for evenings. An example of such a perfume is Dior Hypnotic Poison, which despite its intensity manages to retain lightness and freshness.
